St. Anne’s parish was originally formed in 1852, to serve those who had emigrated to this portion of California in the years following the gold rush. The present church was constructed in 1854, and dedicated in 1856. As time progressed, the Catholic population of this area declined and by the 1920s, regular mass was no longer being celebrated in the church. While some restoration and maintenance was undertaken at the church over the course of the next 50 years, by 1977, the state of the church building had deteriorated to such an extent that the Stockton Diocese was prepared to demolish St. Anne’s. In order to avert this outcome, a group was organized called the St. Anne’s preservation committee, and incorporated as a non-profit organization. The preservation committee undertook a complete restoration of the church, and today this church exists as a tangible expression of the faith of the early Catholic settlers of this part of California. Mass is celebrated in St. Anne’s church several times each year.
